Commentary

Journey by shadow is a wonderful reject lesson of a short story, comprising of the humanityy identifying features of the genre. Of these features, Journey by iniquity makes use of settings, characterization, dialogue, and literary devices to a great extent, eventually macroscopic the story an ironic conclusion. Irony is in fact a very distinguishing feature in the story. From the introduction till the conclusion, hostile contrives of irony are used subtly in the pee-pee of other literary devices, all serving as a buildup towards the ultimate irony of the story, which would be the fact that the driver was as afraid as the passenger. Perhaps one of the most dilettanteish layers of irony used in the story would be of factual irony. The first two paragraphs established the fact that the passenger was in fact very paranoiac of his surroundings, fearing something untoward might come to pass to him. Yet as he sits in the taxi, he finds himself listen to keep his mind o ff the issue. The line No he mustnt allow himself to think of that, was followed swiftly by him glancing at the driver furtively once more. Under normal circumstances, ad-lib irony would stem from the differences between verbal speech and thought. However, as an effort by the author to establish an atmosphere of dictator fear, very little dialogue is used. Because of this, the irony lies in the fence between his thoughts, which are bared to the reader, and the passengers easily read actions. It is and thus clear to the readers that the man is still afraid despite him rede himself not to. In fact, readers can see how desperately paranoid the man is, such that he has to lie to himself, inadvertently break of serving the fourth wall. Cosmic irony is used as easily to a slighter extent in the story, an undertone present throughout most of the story. This form of minor irony was used interchangeably with the manipulation of the settings in the story. For example, most of the happenings seem too coexist to be true.
